Since the onset of the pandemic, we have seen unprecedented rates of burnout in several industries. The constant and persistent work environment stressors have been named one of the most significant motivators behind the Great Resignation. But what happens before burnout? Demotivation in the work environment can lead to depression. What may surprise you is that while often we look to the affected person as the source of the depression, their work environment might be to blame. Here's why:
It's Not Only Where You Work...
Studies show that the work environment is more important to mental health than the actual work itself. The largest significanttributors to this are:
High job strain
Effort and reward imbalance
Lack of control
These three factors can contribute to feelings of demotivation and depression. We often soothe these feelings with distraction, in particular digital distractions. These digital distractions can add to the pressure of responsiveness or constantly being "on" and responding immediately to contacts.
...But Who You Work With
Who you work with and how you interact are also crucial to a healthy work environment. Feeling comfortable communicating openly and that your voice is heard among co-workers and superiors, is key to feeling motivated. This is known as psychological safety in the workplace. There is safety in knowing that employees can be their true selves without fear of negative consequences is vital.
When we avoid distraction as a coping mechanism, we can more clearly evaluate what is happening in our lives and how those things are making us feel. There are a few ways to avoid distraction:
- Set boundaries around digital communication. I.e., don't answer emails after 6 p.m.
- After setting digital boundaries, be sure to communicate them with coworkers to avoid frustrations.
- Most notably, respect your boundaries! Stick to the plan you set.
- Designate time to unplug completely. Digital detoxes are essential.
- Find a quiet space to allow for internal dialog where you can check in with your feelings.
